Vicks VapoRub: A Treatment for Toenail Fungus

One in ten adults suffers from onychomycosis, a condition otherwise known as toenail fungus. It can manifest in many ways but it basically causes the nail to lose its nice uniformed look in exchange for a dry, thicken nail sometimes accompanied with surrounding red, swollen, cracked skin.
This cousin of athlete's foot is a stinker when it comes to treatment because it actually enjoys living and hiding in the toenail. Well, today in clinic I learned that an effective and cheap alternative to medications like Lamisil is something that most can find in their medicine cabinet. By soaking your feet in hot water and then applying Vicks VapoRubto the affected area for as long as needed (usually a few weeks depending on how entrenched the infection is), you can almost always rid yourself of this disfiguring disease. What's the mechanism to Vick's eliminating the fungus? I don't know. But exposing the feet to fresh air by wearing sandals helps as well.

Overall, the literature on the effectiveness of Vick's Vaporub or any of its ingredients in treating onychomycosis (toenail fungus) is sparse to say the least. But the studies I did find seemed to support the method as legit:
So the research in this area is thin, but what studies there are and according to numerous internet sources, the Vaporub seems to be an effective, safe, cheap, "what-do-you-have-to-lose" alternative to other medications with possible adverse side effects. I did see one credible study that showed Vaporub with oral antifungal medication worked much more effectively that oral medication alone.

Thymol is thought to be the active ingredient responsible for killing the pesky toenail fungus. Thymol is a colorless crystalline solid used in perfume, preserving biological specimens, embalming, or as a fungicide or antiseptic. Besides Vaporub, it is also found in Listerine and in some cigarrettes. Internet reports say that several drops of thymol on the affected nail may be quicker and more effective at eliminating fungus. You can purchase Thymol and read more from this Amazon link. Depending on how bad the infection is, you may need two vials.

Prevention is the key. Here are some quick tips to prevent infection or reinfection:
  1. Rotate your shoes often and keep them in a cool dry place.
  2. Change your insoles frequently.
  3. Use an anti-fungal powder or spray in the shoes.
  4. Bleach out the shower on a weekly basis.
  5. Wear sandals in the locker room and don't walk around barefoot.
  6. If your feet sweat excessively, try an antiperspirant spray on your feet.
  7. Keep the toenails in good repair: not too short and not too long.

Woah James, is this for real? I'm going to send you flowers if this really works. Talking to doctors and others with the same ailment, I have never met anyone with a good solution, including Lamasil. One friend that tried Lamasil got kidney stones and then later go the fungus back too!

If it works, I'll give you my PayPal account and you can thank me that way. Hope it works!

Hey, it appears to be an ingredient called "Amoresse Thymol." Do you know what that is? People have apparently had even faster results by buying that stuff straight instead of using the VapoRub that has smaller quantities of the Amoresse Thymol. I have no idea what this thymol stuff is, but I know it's $14 for 1 oz at health/beauty stores. Lemme know if you know yo!

i also saw online about thymol being faster than vick's. did u ever hear back, or are you trying it?

I've actually come across some credible studies on thymol and toe nail fungus. I'll synthesize them to a digestable form and post them this week. Didn't know this was such a hot topic.

Thanks James! I look forward to hearing back.

Does this also help treat athletes foot?

This is not an "urban legend." Research at the Univ. of Michigan confirmed Vapo-Rub's efficacy and isolated the key ingredients. See http://www.nailfunguscures.com/downloads/Published%20Paper%20-%20Invitro%20Study%20of%20Homeopathic%20Remedy%20forToe%20Nail%20Fungus.pdf
for the ingredients.

I tried Walgreen's Clotrimazole for my athlete's foot problem, along with Hydrocortizone and Xylocaine ointments for itching, and got very little relief after 3 days, so I tried Vicks Vaporub and after the first application the itching stopped and after 3 days it is almost gone!

I just returned from my family physician's office and the pharmacy. I have "onychomycosos" or nail fungus on all 10 fingernails due to acrylic nails. My Dr. just prescribed an oral medication of Lamisil plus suggested I gently scrub nails with Vix Vapo Rub nightly to assist. He tells me Johns Hopkins has conducted studies on the stuff...so it must work?

whoah! ive had it since i was like 3(now im 16) and while it usually doesnt bother me much, it can be hell when the toes swell, or the bottom ofmy feet crack... ill give this a try as soon as i can get my hands on the stuff.

I was reluctant to take oral medication that my doctor prescribed because I didn't want to take a pill that could affect my whole body when the problem was in my stinking toenails. After a few months of Vicks, I bought that Thymol stuff you recommended and it has done the trick! Thank you so much for your advice. I can wear sandals again without the shame.

What is the best way to apply the Thymol to my nails? When should I expect to see results?

Thanks

I used a little brush from an old nail polish thing my wife had and brushed it on twice a day. Wore flip flops or open toed sandals as much as I could, and got rid of my old stinky shoes. Took a couple of months to fully clear up, but did see results after a few weeks.

Vick is working for me - clean pink nail growing up from the bottom. thought I would never have pretty toenails again. I apply twice a day and the added advantage is a nice tingly feeling.
